Changing the oil on a 1967 Shelby GT500 is an essential maintenance task to ensure the longevity and performance of this classic muscle car. Old or degraded oil can cause engine wear and reduce efficiency. If you've noticed the oil light is on, the oil looks dark or gritty, or it's been over 3,000 miles since the last change, it's time for new oil. Here's how to solve this issue.
Step 1: Gather Your Supplies
Before you begin, gather the following supplies:
- New oil filter (specifically compatible with a 1967 Shelby GT500)
- 5 quarts of high-quality motor oil (check your manual for the recommended viscosity)
- Oil filter wrench
- Oil drain pan
- Funnel
- Socket set
- Rags for cleanup
- Car jack and jack stands
Step 2: Prepare Your Workspace
Park your Shelby GT500 on a flat, level surface. Engage the parking brake for safety. To access the oil components easily, jack up the front of the car and securely place it on jack stands. Never rely solely on a car jack, as it's unsafe.
Step 3: Locate the Oil Pan and Drain Plug
Crawl underneath the car, approximately near the center. The oil pan is a large, flat metal pan located directly below the engine. Look for a large bolt on the oil pan – this is the drain plug.
Step 4: Drain the Old Oil
Place your oil drain pan directly underneath the drain plug to catch the old oil. Using a socket set, carefully unscrew the drain plug. Be cautious, as the oil may be hot if the car was recently running. Allow all the oil to drain into the pan. Once it's drained, clean the drain plug and screw it back into place securely.
Step 5: Remove and Replace the Oil Filter
Locate the oil filter. It is typically found on the side of the engine block, a cylindrical metal part about the size of a coffee mug. Using the oil filter wrench, turn the filter counterclockwise to remove it. Be prepared for some oil spillage. Compare the old filter to your new one to ensure compatibility. Lightly coat the rubber seal of the new filter with fresh oil. Screw the new filter onto the engine by hand until it's snug, then give it an additional three-quarters turn.
Step 6: Add New Oil
Lower the car from the jack stands and open the hood. Locate the oil cap, which is a round plastic cap with a yellow oil sign on it and a small handle; it’s usually found on the top center of the engine. Unscrew and remove the oil cap. Place a funnel in the opening and carefully pour in the new oil. It's wise to start with 4 quarts, then check the oil level with the dipstick and add more if necessary until it reaches the appropriate level.
Step 7: Check for Leaks and Finalize
After adding the oil, replace and tighten the oil cap. Start the engine and let it run for a couple of minutes. Check underneath the car to ensure there are no leaks from the drain plug or oil filter. Shut off the engine and perform a final check of the oil level with the dipstick; top off if needed.
By following these steps, you can independently and effectively change the oil on your 1967 Shelby GT500, ensuring your engine runs smoothly and remains in peak condition.
